Translation and Legalization of Documents
An official document issued by a Thai, Cambodian, or Laotian authority – for example, a birth certificate, a criminal record certificate, or a court judgment – to have legal value in Italy must be:
-
legalized by the territorially competent Ministry of Foreign Affairs (the Thai, Cambodian, or Laotian Ministry of Foreign Affairs);
-
translated into Italian;
-
submitted to the Consular Office of the Embassy for subsequent certification and verification of the translation.
Legalization at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the translation of the documents into Italian cannot be performed by the Embassy, but must be carried out by the person concerned.
For useful information, the following link provides a list of reference translation agencies; the list is neither binding nor exhaustive. Please note that if translations containing multiple (different) errors are submitted, the applicant will be called to the Embassy to resubmit the documents without the requested follow-ups/measures:

To initiate the legalization procedure, the interested party must book an appointment through the online booking system on our website (see the link below) and appear in person at the Embassy to submit the documents:
Please note that documents can also be submitted by a third party, provided they have a proper delegation on plain paper and a copy of the applicant’s passport.
The legalization service is a paid service. The consular fees will be calculated on the date of the appointment for the document submission and must be paid in cash in local currency (Thai Baht).
The legalization procedure takes about two weeks. On the date of the document submission appointment, a second appointment will be scheduled for the delivery of the legalized documents.
Procedure for Thailand
For documents issued in Thailand, the original Thai documents (or certified copies), legalized by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, must be presented at the Embassy along with the corresponding Italian translations.
