Digital nomad / remote worker visa

Visa applications must be lodged at the Visa Office of the Embassy without appointment during public opening hours. Applicants should always appear in person. All documents must be printed out and presented in original alongside copy where required. The passport of the applicant will be kept and returned with the visa, if approved.

DIGITAL NOMAD VISA (for self-employed only):

Applicants must also provide:

  1. Visa application form;
  2. One passport photo (not to be affixed on the visa application form);
  3. Valid passport with at least two blank pages;
  4. For non-Thai/Cambodian/Laotian applicants, long-term Thai/Cambodian/Laotian visa at least annual(please note that three-month visas although renewable are not acceptable);
  5. Cover letter;
  6. Round-trip/one-way airline ticket or booking confirmation;
  7. Travel medical insurance covering the period of intended stay with a minimum coverage of 30,000.00 EUR for emergency hospital treatment and repatriation expenses;
  8. Proof of suitable lodging, such as long-term lease agreement or property deed registered with the competent Italian Authority (Agenzia delle Entrate).
  9. Copy of passport and previous visas (only Schengen, UK, USA and Canada visas issued in the last 5 years; if visas are affixed in the old passport, a copy of the old travel document is also required).

Furthermore, applicants are requested to meet the following requirements:

–          To be a highly-qualified worker;

–          To possess an annual income derived from legitimate sources, which must be at least three times the minimum amount level set by the current national legislation for the exemption from participation in medical and health public assistance (approximately 25.000,00 Euro). Supportive evidence should include as much information deemed fit to prove steady income sources declared as self-employed;

–          To have at least a 6-month experience in the field of work to be carried out.

With regard to the first requirement, there are three ways to prove that you belong to a qualifying profession:

  1. The possession of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree (lasting at least 3 years) to be recognized through a CIMEA statement of comparability or a Declaration of Value;
  2. The relevant qualification and/or attestation of competence issued by the competent Italian authority for professions licensed by government agencies (such as architects, engineers, teachers): List of regulated professions and competent authorities;
  3. Having acquired a higher professional qualification to be proven with at least 5 years of work experience in the field, which must equate to comparable tertiary level educational qualification pertaining to the profession or specific sector of the contract or offer of employment. For each employment in such period of time, you need to submit the following documents issued by the Public Authority of the country where the expertise was acquired:
  4. Company information and business sector of activity;
  5. The position held within the company (owner, partner, employee);
  6. Copy of the employment contract and/or copies of the pay slips related to the working experience (at least two for each year);
  7. Letter from the company or employer describing your professional duties at the company including the start and end dates of the employment.

PLEASE NOTE that for executives and specialists working in the ICT industry only, the requirement is reduced to 3 years of professional experience acquired in the past 7 years.

 

REMOTE WORKER VISA (for subordinate workers only):

Applicants must also provide:

  1. Visa application form;
  2. One passport photo (not to be affixed on the visa application form);
  3. Valid passport with at least two blank pages;
  4. For non-Thai/Cambodian/Laotian applicants, long-term Thai/Cambodian/Laotian visa at least annual(please note that three-month visas although renewable are not acceptable);
  5. Cover letter;
  6. Round-trip/one-way airline ticket or booking confirmation;

Additional requirements for remote workers only:

–          Letter from employer stating that the employer has not been convicted in the past five years of any crimes related to the facilitation of illegal immigration, the exploitation of minors for work purposes, the violation of labor laws, or other crimes listed under comma 5-bis of article 22 of the Testo Unico Immigrazione (Italian immigration code). The letter must be signed by an executive, legal representative, or other appropriate agent of the employer, and it must be submitted in original alongside a copy of ID of the signatory (you can request a sample letter from the Visa Office).

 

PLEASE NOTE that documents issued by non-EU authorities must be submitted in original or certified true copy after Apostille/legalization by the competent Authority/Italian Consulate and accompanied by the certification of correct translation issued by the competent Italian consulate.
