From August 3rd, 2026, the paper version of the identity card will no longer be valid for travel abroad, regardless of the expiry date indicated on the back.
Decree-Law No. 108 of 26 June 2026 introduced several important changes:
- A non-expired paper identity card may still be used as an identification document in dealings with the Italian Public Administration and with entities providing public services, including Consulates;
- In urgent cases, Italian Municipalities may issue a provisional identity document valid for travel abroad, non-renewable and with a validity period not exceeding 6 months. The document may not be accepted in some foreign countries: please check the entry requirements on Viaggiare Sicuri;

As of June 1st, Italian citizens residing abroad and registered with Registry of Italians Residing Abroad may also apply for the Electronic Identity Card at any Italian Municipality, as provided for by Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026. Remember to bring your Tax ID Code with you!
